"The Fugitive's Story" sculpture group by John Rogers ca.1869
September 2020

Donated by Frank J. and Virginia Williams.
Part of The Frank and Virginia Williams Collection of Lincolniana
Collection number #FVW03950
The plaster sculpture depicts abolitionists John Greenleaf Whittier, Williams Lloyd Garrison, and Henry Ward Beecher listening to the tale of an escaped enslaved mother. While illustrative of a fictional account (and created well after the end of the Civil War), the work was well-received by individuals who supported the work of the three abolitionists.
